Being a successful make money at home entrepreneur depends on many factors including, but not limited to:
(a) A marketable skill set or product.
(b) Vision and Planning.
(c) Expert knowledge in a particular niche.
(d) A quiet and adequate work area.
(e) Structures and processes.
(f) Continuing education.
(g) A strong support entity.
(h) A genuine interest and passion in your business.
The above stated factors are important to your success. Nonetheless, they are only supplementary to the three major traits which harbor success. These three traits are:
1. Self-discipline
2. Desire
3. Belief
The absence of any one of these characteristics can be detrimental. If you are missing just one such characteristic, you can expect to engage in dalliance, contentedness, anxiety, and a let down. This will lead to the ultimate demise of your online endeavor, meaning that you will not make money at home. It is the absence of at least one of these characteristics in so many individuals why 97% of online business result in failure.
1. Self-discipline
This is a trait which is tested at the outset. Once you leave your nine to five job to make money at home, there is no longer anyone to answer to except for yourself. With this newfound freedom come new challenges. Specifically, you now work, sleep eat, and watch television under one roof.
It now becomes easier to watch a television show which you previously had to record, or to take lunch breaks which are longer than those typically permitted by an employer.
Some people see the ability to do things which were previously reserved for after work during the day as a privilege which those who make money at home have. You just have to realize that if you are away from your home office, your work is not getting completed. If your work is not getting completed, you do not get paid. Hence, it is important that you micro-manage yourself more so than your previous boss did. You need to keep a schedule and account for every minute of the work day.
Realize that if you do not have self-discipline, you will not be able to stay on task with the requirements of a successful home business.
2. Desire
How strong is your desire to not only make money at home, but to work in the specialized niche you have chosen? If you are simply in it for the money, you are in it for the wrong thing. Money is hardly enough to carry you through the hard times, challenges, and setbacks which are inherent of business life.
Desire is your internal fuel, and keeps you going when everything else around you seems to be falling apart. Your desire keeps your head up high, and keeps you motivated to do things outside of your comfort zone, which are essential to the survival of your business.
If you lack desire, it will be easy to give up in the face of adversity. Thus, it is essential that you choose an online business which you have a strong desire to succeed with. This will be the only thing keeping you moving forward at some point in the future.
3. Belief
How strongly do you believe in yourself, your business, and your right to succeed, enjoy wealth, have beautiful things and be happy? Utilize your frame of thought to your advantage. While your mind is your most powerful asset, it can also be your most powerful adversary.
Your specific set of beliefs, irrespective of what is actually happening in your environment, can dictate whether your are successful or not. You would be stunned at the number of geniuses with incredible talent, ingenuity, and vision cannot find success simply because they do not believe in their ability or worthiness for success.
If you are without belief, you are battling internally with your doubts, and are holding yourself back. You need to exercise your mind. Not only must you train your mind to believe that you have the right to be successful, but also to eliminate any doubts that you will be successful.
Anyone can make money at home with the proper self-discipline, desire, and belief. This is the recipe for entrepreneurial success.

Wenger - Homegrown rule won't affect us
By Nick Teale
Arsène Wenger has confirmed the Premier League's new ‘homegrown rule' will not affect Arsenal.
However the manager is still against the new squad rules as he believes it could compromise the quality of football in England's top flight.
Under the new regulations each Premier League club will have to name a first-team squad of no more than 25 players, of which a maximum of 17 may not be homegrown players. Players born on or after January 1, 1989 do not need to be registered as part of the 25-man squad.
Arsenal's current first-team squad contains 26 players, of which 13 are counted as homegrown, and seven are Under-21s.
Nonetheless, Wenger is not in favour of the new ruling. Speaking during the weekend's trip to Poland, the manager explained why.
"The homegrown rule will not affect us," he said. "But I feel that when you want to be the best league in the world the restriction is bad.
"The only focus for me in life has to be quality in a competitive world and not [your] passport or where you have been educated.
"What is most important is that if you are good enough you can play where you want. If you want to be the best league in the world you have to respect that." Read More......

Bartley - Loan could put me in Pearce's mind
By Nick Teale
Kyle Bartley is hoping a season-long loan at Sheffield United will be the springboard which sees him leap into contention for both Arsenal and England.
The 19-year-old received praise from his manager and team-mates during a three-month spell with the Blades at the end of last term. The defender has now returned to Yorkshire for the entire 2010/11 campaign and, as well as wanting to get his loan side promoted, he is eyeing an international call-up.
"The aim is to go on loan and get myself into Arsène Wenger's thoughts," he told Arsenal.com. "And if you are playing week-in week-out in the Championship, England Under-21s and [their manager] Stuart Pearce might start looking at you.
"I have spoken to the lads and the manager at Sheffield United and they are all looking to get promoted this year. I think they have invested quite well.
"They've always been contenders in the last five or ten years and I think that will be the aim for this year."
Bartley made 13 appearances for Sheffield United last term and is looking forward to working with their manager Kevin Blackwell again this season.
"I got a taste for it last year," he said. "It was only three months so for me to go for the season will definitely do me good. I enjoyed every minute of it.
"I want to become a solid defender and from there I can work on other aspects of my game. But I am a centre half and if I can defend to the top level I'll have a good chance.
"[Kevin Blackwell] is very hands on, he'll tell you how it is and won't hold back. As a young player when I needed an arm around me he would do that. I've only got praise for him."

Optimizing Your Google PPC Account in 15 Minutes
Because you probably wear many hats in your day-to-day operations as a business owner, it might be difficult to find the time to manage your Google™ pay-per-click (or PPC) account. To that end, we’ve highlighted 3 quick and easy optimization techniques that you can undertake in 15 minutes or less to ensure that your PPC campaigns maintain optimal performance.
1. Review your Search Query Performance reports. We all know that a search engine’s definition of “relevant queries” is often very different from our own. That’s why Google’s Search Query Performance reports make it easy for advertisers to review the actual search queries that are triggering their ads and then exclude the irrelevant queries. The search query report can be run quickly by clicking the “See search terms” button on the “Keywords” tab of your campaigns. Selecting the “All” option will bring up a report of all the search queries that resulted in clicks during the specified time period.
As you review the report, look for queries that are irrelevant to your business or that have driven up costs but haven’t converted. To negate these queries, mark the check box next to them and click the “Add as negative keyword” button above the results.
Search query reports can also be a great way to find additional keyword opportunities for your campaigns. As you review the reports and see terms that are triggering your ads but are not currently in your campaigns, select them and click the “Add as keyword” button above the results. While your ads may already be showing up for these keywords because of broad-match queries, adding them to your campaigns will allow you to monitor them more closely and optimize them for greater profitability.
2. Use keyword filters. Managing keywords can often be a tedious and time-consuming task—especially when you’re managing campaigns with a large number of keywords. Thanks to Google’s new “Filter” option, advertisers can quickly filter their keywords for easier management.
To filter keywords, simply click the “Filter” button on the “Keywords” tab of your campaigns. When selecting the “Create filter” option from the drop-down menu, a yellow box should appear. Within this box, you can select your filter criteria and apply them to the keywords. As you create filters, you can save them for future use in your account. You can also use the preset filters that Google provides.
In the list below, we’ve included some filters that we often use in our client accounts. The “Xs” that are included in the filter criteria are determined on an account-by-account basis, and they should be based on the ROI associated with each product or service.
3. Review your content placements. If you’re currently running ads on the content network, reviewing content placements is an absolute necessity. To review these placements, simply click on the “Networks” tab of your campaigns. From here, you can review the content placements of your ads during a specified time period. We recommend reviewing data for at least 30 days to get a more accurate measure of each placement’s performance. (Note: The keyword filters listed above can also be used to pinpoint and exclude unprofitable placements.)
The primary goal of reviewing placements is to look for the ones that are driving up costs, are not converting, or are irrelevant to your business. When you find any of these placements, you can easily exclude them from your campaign or ad group by selecting the placement and clicking the “Exclude placements” button.
So . . . if you can set aside 15 minutes in your busy schedule, try out these quick and easy optimization techniques to improve the performance of your Google PPC account. In the lists below, I’ve highlighted some of the details associated with the new features and the ways they can help boost your pay-per-click (PPC) efforts. I’ve also included some links to help you learn more about the features.
Remarketing

Remarketing
- This feature (probably one of the most exciting features Google has unveiled in some time) is available to all AdWords advertisers.
- Remarketing allows you to retarget people who have already visited your site (through PPC ads, direct traffic, organic traffic, etc.).
- The AdWords system allows you to set parameters to remarket to people who fit your designated profile(s). These remarketing ads are displayed on the Google Content Network.
- Here are some of the profiles you can create for your retargeting efforts:
- People who put items in the shopping cart, but didn’t buy.
- People who bought an item, and now you’d like to advertise a related item to them. For example, you sold pairs of ruby red slippers, and now you want to persuade the users to buy a gingham dress to match.
- People who bought a product that may need to be refilled in a few weeks. For example, you sold packages of Scooby Snacks, and now you want to encourage the customers to buy more to replenish their supply.
- Information is collected via a script that you place on the back-end of the eCommerce store page that you’d like to track. Custom combinations can also be established.
- Learn more about Remarketing.
- This feature is available to all AdWords advertisers who also have a Google Merchant Center account (through Google Product Search or the Google Affiliate Network).
- Product Extensions allow you to display product photos within your PPC text ad. The system pulls images from your Google Merchant Center account and matches them with your PPC ads. Users can click the expand (+) button to view the images.
- The added benefit of having images within your ad speaks for itself, but another advantage is that when expanded, the ad pushes competitors’ ads further down the page, thus giving you more visibility.
- To enable this feature, choose a campaign and then go to Settings>Ad Extensions>Products>Use Products From My Google Merchant Center Account. Then, select the radio button next to your Google Merchant Center account number. If no account appears, you’ll need to log into your Google Merchant Center account, go to Settings>AdWords, and then input your Google AdWords customer ID number.
- You don’t have control over which images are pulled for your ads, so be sure your feeds are up-to-date and accurate.
- Learn more about Product Extensions.
- This feature is available to all AdWords advertisers.
- Mobile Targeting has been around for a while, but the functionality has increased dramatically.
- Now you can cherry-pick the types of devices on which you’d like your ads to appear, including the iPad.
- To enable/disable the options, choose a campaign and then go to Settings>Networks And Devices>Devices>Edit>Devices>Let Me Choose>Advanced Device And Carrier Options. You can then select or deselect specific devices and carriers.
- When you’re doing mobile targeting, I recommend that you create a separate mobile-targeted campaign so that you can track the results more easily.
- Learn more about Mobile Targeting.
- This feature is available to selected AdWords advertisers. To see if your account is eligible, choose a campaign and go to Settings>Ad Extensions>Sitelinks. If you don’t see a Sitelinks option, then your account is not yet eligible.
- Ad Sitelinks allow you to show additional links within your PPC ad, instead of just one display URL. Up to 4 Sitelinks can show at a time, but you can set up as many as 10 links per campaign for rotation.
- For example, if you have an ad for pickled peppers and you also sell porridge, curds, and whey, you can include links to your porridge page, your curds page, and your whey page. This helps provide additional real estate for your PPC ads, and it presents opportunities for upsells and cross-sells directly within your PPC ad.

How to Get (and Keep) a Top Spot in Local Search Results
If you do a search on Google, Bing™, or Yahoo!® for a keyword like “tires,” you might end up seeing a local map with local tire sellers listed above the regular search results. This is great news if you’re a tire retailer who happens to be on the list, but it may not be good if your store isn’t visible. Over the past couple of years, such map results have become increasingly commonplace for a variety of searches, and people who hold spots for local searches have gotten more website visits and phone calls as a result. Meanwhile, people who may otherwise have great search engine positions may feel marginalized because their search rankings have effectively been “pushed down” by a map.
It’s important to note that a variety of factors go into the results you see displayed on any given map for a search result. Here are some examples:
So . . . how do you make sure that your business is listed, and that you have a fair chance at getting displayed on a regular basis?
In the past, some companies have abused local listings by getting secondary addresses at mailbox stores and post offices. In other cases, people have “hijacked” other legitimate company listings and put their own phone number and website address information into the real company’s profile. You should keep in mind that any attempt to abuse local rankings or artificially secure top spots could get all of your listings blocked.
If you want to maintain a prominent position in local search results, it pays to ask your customers to give you a review every now and then. In our own experiences, we’ve seen merchants hand out forms requesting testimonials and giving customers a list of sites to choose from. Note that not every review has to have 5 stars for your site to get more prominence. In fact, too many 5-star reviews may be an indicator of “shilling.”
Securing your position on search engines for locally based searches makes good sense right now, and it will be even more important in the future. Many of the local map results you see today are also the basis for next-generation tools like augmented reality, GPS-based advertising, and location-based search services. If you’ve seen commercials where people hold their smartphones up to a building and see virtual information, you can see where this type of directory submission is heading. For right now, being visible in local search engine results can definitely have a positive impact on your company’s revenue, so you shouldn’t ignore the potential of local search.

It’s important to note that a variety of factors go into the results you see displayed on any given map for a search result. Here are some examples:
- Google may list companies based on their proximity to “the center of town,” or they may give more credence to businesses that have more reviews in Google Places or in external directories like Yelp.
- Other signals that deliver results could be your IP address or any location-based data (such as GPS, Wi-Fi, or network) that may lead a search engine to believe you’re in a particular spot.
- On top of that, local results may be based on users’ previous searches, so a user might be getting results that aren’t seen by anyone else!
So . . . how do you make sure that your business is listed, and that you have a fair chance at getting displayed on a regular basis?
- For starters, you should register with the local business tools provided by Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. You should make sure that your profile is up-to-date with your business hours, the keywords that are relevant to your products or services, and the phone number where you can take customer calls. You should try to include images and videos—perhaps even YouTube videos, which are easy to create and upload and help to describe your shop. All of these things contribute to a more trustworthy profile, and they help your customers understand what you have to offer.
- Secondarily, you should submit your business to as many Yellow Pages–style directories as possible. Reviews and information from these directories often get picked up by services like Google Places, so a review in Yelp may show up on your Google pages. The added advantage of local directory submission services is that your business will get found by the users of these directories and you’ll even get phone calls and site traffic from these listings. If you’d prefer not to manually submit your business to multiple sites, Web.com provides local directory submission services.

Being in the Right Place at the Right Time
On my way to work every day, I drive over a curved bridge. There are some very tall streetlights on this bridge, and there are some large blackbirds that like to perch on top of these lights . . . they often do so in pairs. I was admiring the birds as I started the ascent today . . . leading a pack of cars. Just as I reached the apex of the bridge and began the descent, a smaller blackbird hopped off the median ledge and landed right in the middle of the road.
I braked, as did the car next to me, thank goodness. “What are you doing, you goofball?” I said out loud. It made no sense for this bird to hop onto the road in front of a steady stream of oncoming traffic . . . there was nothing apparent in the road that might have interested him.
As I approached the bottom of the bridge, I noticed a policeman standing in some bushes and holding a laser device . . . he was tracking the speed of cars as they crossed . . . right at the point where a car would speed up because of the descent. I thought . . . glad I wasn’t speeding! . . . then I remembered the bird that hopped in my way.
Whether you believe in Divine Providence or happy coincidences, there is definitely a play of luck involved in our everyday lives. Luck often makes the difference between a smooth ride and a catastrophe. As I pondered luck after the play of events this morning, I thought about how highly successful people—no matter what their profession—nearly always make a reference to their “good luck.” Hard work and perseverance are of course also relevant, but luck is a significant factor.
Luck is the phenomenon of being in the right place at the right time. And luck is very important for any business. You may have thought more than once that one of your competitors “has all the luck.” So, you ask, how can your business get that lucky?
While luck seems to include elements of the “unseen,” there is a certain aspect of luck that is a known factor in the success of any business: being in the right place at the right time. Although we’ve heard the “location, location, location” cliché time and time again, I don’t think it can be emphasized enough. You need to be in the right place so your customers can find you when they need you. This applies to both your offline store and your advertising efforts—including your website.
In the offline world . . . you need to choose your location carefully. You need to study the demographics of the area and your potential competition. It’s always great to “get there first” and be the first business of your kind in a particular area . . . but if you don’t get there first, you need to develop a strategy that differentiates you from your competition.
In the online world . . . you need to be found where your customers are looking for you . . . in local directories and on Google™, Bing™, and other search engines. Many businesses attribute their success to their high search engine rankings or their effective pay-per-click campaigns. While getting on the first page of Google may often seem like “luck,” it’s actually based on science. So you need to find search engine scientists who can help you get there.
Web.com offers a number of products that can improve your visibility online, and we also have some of the top search scientists in the industry. You’ve probably read some of Patrick Hare’s articles on this blog. As part of the Web.com Search Agency team, he’s a veritable brain trust of search engine optimization (or SEO) knowledge. If you’d like some assistance in gaining your competitive edge on search engines, feel free to contact our team of professionals.
So . . . whether you were born under a lucky star or a starry night, taking the right steps for your business can greatly increase your chances for success. And if you take the steps to ensure that your location is optimal . . . then your customers will surely find you when the time is right. Read More......

Design a Website That Saves You Time and Money
The Internet has been popular for long enough that many people have forgotten one of the key reasons for having a website: saving time and money by helping customers help themselves.
If you can remember the business environment before the late 1990s, you may recall that customer service was a much more “hands-on” affair, and it usually involved a phone call or an in-store visit to get information. Before the Web became ubiquitous, servicing the customer involved the time of a trained employee, and it didn’t always result in a positive return on investment. Solving customer issues was based more on verbal than visual cues, and customer satisfaction could be mixed as a result.
On the sales side, it was necessary to send out salespeople for face-to-face contacts. Plus, businesses kept the local printer busy generating trifold brochures and folders, which often contained product descriptions that had to be reprinted when critical specs changed or were inadvertently left out. In the days before the PDF, printing up a batch of sales sheets could run you hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on the size of your audience. Invariably, you’d end up tossing out reams of unused glossy paper when the product was discontinued or upgraded.
For most businesses, websites have offered solutions to those problems. In the same way that advances in software have made accounting a lot easier, a good website design can help your business save time and money when it comes to personnel and marketing. Let’s look at some examples:
If you’re continually being asked for an item you don’t (or can’t) sell or if people want a related service outside your capability, you may want to let people know that you don’t offer it. For example: If your business provides commercial pest control but not residential service, your website would be a good place to point that out. As an added service, you could partner with another company to make sure that a site visitor can be sent to the right destination for residential requests. And if you have enough site traffic, you can even sell ad space to a company that can take care of those visitors.
Using your website to streamline your small business operations offers you a lot of advantages as your business expands. For instance, you can increase your revenue without having to add to your headcount. You can also improve employee satisfaction because self-service customers (or nonconverting callers) will free up your staff to concentrate on more profitable work. By adding interactive features to your site, customers can do things like place orders, make appointments, or schedule reservations online 24 hours a day—which helps to cut down on the dreaded “Monday” call crush that most brick-and-mortar companies tend to experience.
Revisiting your site content—or creating a brand-new website—can take a lot of pressure off overburdened employees without adding to the cost of personnel, especially in an era in which people are more likely to look to the Internet before picking up the phone.

- If your customer service people are answering the same questions over and over, you can update the FAQs section on your website with the relevant information or make sure that it’s prominent in another section on your site.
- If people are frequently asking for more information about a specific product, you can showcase that product on your website and then train your salespeople to guide callers to that page. This creates a real-time conversation with in-depth information, and it increases the potential for a closed sale.
- While it still pays to follow up a valuable sales inquiry with a snail-mail reply, you can often save the cost of shipping bulky sales collateral by including the same information sheets on your website—along with videos and other promotional materials that can be viewed by window shoppers and warm leads alike.

Investing in SEO Before Your Big Sales Season
People who are new to making sales online often miss peak online selling months, because of either a lack of preparation or a failure to understand online seasonality. When a site design project is held up or search engine optimization (SEO) initiatives are delayed, the resulting lack of search engine rankings and traffic can represent a huge opportunity cost. By understanding seasonality, and the time it takes search engines to respond to SEO, you can do a better job of scheduling projects . . . and making sure you have a “Plan B” if there are any delays.
Many of our customers use trend tracking to ensure that their search engine optimization campaigns will be in place during times of peak customer interest. Google™ has a free tool called Google Trends, which allows people to discover historical search traffic for top terms. Because search engine optimization takes weeks or months to take effect, it’s important to have most of the basic work implemented in advance of demand.
Search engines like Google generally take time to respond to SEO, especially if a site has not had any major changes for some time. This is because sites that have grown “stale” are not regularly visited by Google, so on-page changes can take some time to be discovered. At the same time, link building (which acts as an endorsement for your site and its content) needs to be indexed and factored into Google’s algorithm as well. Once these items are in place, Google still takes some time to apply its new information to the search results. With Google’s recent update (called the Google Caffeine update), many new pages get indexed faster . . . and established and trusted websites that add new pages are more likely to get priority.
From a budgeting standpoint, it’s important to have SEO and linking campaigns in place ahead of time. Because companies often budget on a fiscal-year basis, executives should be on board early on so they can sign off on an increased spend in the current fiscal year for sales expected in the year following.
If your site has yet to be launched, the advantages of a “soft launch” cannot be underestimated. Allowing a search engine to find your site (or several important pages) prior to its “grand opening” allows you to start the SEO clock early . . . and start pointing links at your website. While some people worry about getting too much traffic before the site is ready, a more common concern arises when a site launches and traffic takes several months to trickle in.
Like most other marketing and advertising budgets, SEO and link-building dollars have been cut back because of the slow economy. Some online companies have even gone out of business. From a competitive standpoint, this presents an advantage to companies that plan to stick it out. It’s now possible to move ahead of companies that were previously aggressive with their SEO and link building. Furthermore, companies that have closed up shop are going to be disappearing from the search engine rankings, so this could be one of the best times to start or improve your SEO projects.
Is your peak season happening right now? Although you can still get customer traffic, the cost can be higher. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising through Google AdWords and Microsoft® adCenter can get your content found within a few hours. During profitable times like the Christmas season, for example, PPC can be a very worthwhile source of site traffic. Nonetheless, PPC campaigns tend to work better once they’ve been running for a few weeks, because search engines use your click history to determine how relevant your site is compared to other advertisers. If you can improve your “quality score” with PPC engines over time, you may get better ad positions for a lower cost-per-click (CPC) than the advertiser who has an ad listed beneath yours.
For any online marketing project involving search engine optimization, executives and decision makers need to be patient in waiting for results, but quick when it comes to executing SEO. The inscrutable nature of search engine algorithms means that there is no easy answer for when SEO efforts will translate into first-page rankings.
Because the vast majority of positive website rankings increase at some point, an investment in SEO today may pay off next week, in six months, or a year from now . . . in ways that greatly exceed the return on investment. By understanding the “hurry up and wait” nature of the search engine rankings game, you can have your work in place while your competitors are still drawing up their project plans. Read More......

10 Tips for Beginner Bloggers
One of the most difficult parts of blogging is actually getting started. You might ask yourself: “What do I have to say?” “Is it really that important?” “Who will actually read what I write?” The answers to these questions will never be revealed . . . if you don’t start blogging.
We’ve all heard about the benefits of generating fresh content that search engines love, link-worthy posts that get shared across the Web, and brand interaction that can only happen in the blogosphere . . . but what about coming up with ideas and writing good posts? Here are 10 tips to help make your first foray into blogging successful:
We’ve all heard about the benefits of generating fresh content that search engines love, link-worthy posts that get shared across the Web, and brand interaction that can only happen in the blogosphere . . . but what about coming up with ideas and writing good posts? Here are 10 tips to help make your first foray into blogging successful:
- Select appropriate topics. You can take a different perspective or provide better information than other blogs in your industry. Think about what topics a reader would find interesting, useful, or relevant about your industry. Don’t make your blog a sales pitch. Write about topics that can help your readers—such as various ways to use your product—or that can educate them about your industry. Use the opportunity to connect with your readers by showing that you know what you’re talking about when it comes to your industry.
Don’t risk your reputation by posting controversial, personal, or hostile content—unless that’s part of your brand. The blog may be one of the first interactions a customer has with you. Make the interaction count by establishing trust and credibility through engaging or useful content.
- Consider length and style. It’s best to limit your entries to 150–250 words, as most Internet readers tend to skim. If your topic requires a more in-depth treatment, you can go beyond 250 words. Keep in mind that you can stretch a complicated topic across several posts, rather than stuffing it all into one entry.
Most blog posts tend to be conversational and informal in tone, although certain industries may need to be more technical or informational. Just remember to give your posts personality. Think of your blog as a lobby for your brand. It has to feel welcoming and approachable, while still being able to convey all of the useful information visitors need.
- Format effectively. Because most online readers skim, format your post to make it easier to read. Break up text by using paragraphs, subheadings, quotations, bullet points, lists, images, video, or other elements to organize your information in a way that makes it easy and accessible for your readers. Be creative!
- Write engaging headlines. The headline is one of the most important pieces of a blog post. Just like your storefront attracts customers into your shop, a good headline will draw your visitors in. When writing headlines, remember not to shout at or market to readers. Instead, give them something short, sweet, and engaging. Entice them. Use active voice.
- Use links responsibly. Don’t use more than a few links in a blog post; otherwise, your post will appear like spam. Instead, link when necessary, and when it’s relevant to what you’re writing about. Try not to use the phrase “click here” as the anchor text when linking. Instead, use keywords that are relevant to your brand. That makes a link more understandable, and it can also help with search engine rankings.
- Include images. Images can make your post more attractive and—because they break up the text—easier to read. Include images that complement what you’re talking about in your post. Also, don’t forget to use image alt tags to provide search engines with information about the content of the images.
- Be consistent. Daily updates are ideal. When you post less than once a week, you risk losing your readers. Establish a posting schedule so that you keep the fresh content coming. The worst thing you could do is start blogging and then go missing. It becomes embarrassing when a reader comes to your blog only to find the last update is months old. If a company doesn’t care enough to update its blog regularly, what does that say about how it values its readers (or customers)?
- Proofread, edit, proofread again. There’s nothing worse than reading a blog post riddled with grammatical and spelling errors. It’s frustrating for the reader, and it looks unprofessional. Take time to proofread, edit, and proofread again.
- Respond to feedback. Blogs can be an excellent customer service tool because they create a more informal environment for customers to voice their thoughts or concerns. Be sure to take the time to respond and interact accordingly.
- Stay committed. Finally, stay committed to your blog. Make the effort to update regularly, develop good content, and be a thought leader in your industry. Practice writing. Read more. Comment and interact on other blogs in your industry. By being committed to making your blog successful, you’re already taking the first step toward having a blog that helps your brand, and ultimately, your business.
Effective SEO Keyword Research Is Like Writing a Great Novel
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a buzzword that’s permeating the world of business. My followers on Twitter are frequently asking me if I’d like them to handle my SEO, and when I log into my Gmail account, I often see “Ads by Google” that are offering me links to SEO services. Clearly, this industry is becoming more and more important . . . and thus more and more competitive. So to ensure that the efforts you put into your SEO campaign are successful, you need to constantly be on top of your game and know the best SEO practices.
The first step in any SEO campaign is to identify the keywords that you want to target. Effective keyword research can make or break a campaign. But how can you ensure that the research you do is effective and a step above the rest?
Think of it this way: Effective SEO keyword research is like writing a great novel. There’s a reason why Stephen King, Dan Brown, and, yes, even Stephenie Meyer have had such incredible success. Whether or not you enjoy their writing, they must be doing something right.
To help prove my case, let’s explore five tips on effective SEO keyword research:

Think of it this way: Effective SEO keyword research is like writing a great novel. There’s a reason why Stephen King, Dan Brown, and, yes, even Stephenie Meyer have had such incredible success. Whether or not you enjoy their writing, they must be doing something right.
To help prove my case, let’s explore five tips on effective SEO keyword research:
- Know your business. You’re the owner of your business, and nobody knows it better than you. You know what you sell, you know what your customers buy, you know which products do well, and you know what types of people your customers are. So target your keywords based on these ideas. Make a list of words or phrases that are important to your business that you can use as a reference point.
But don’t include things that won’t resonate with your clientele. For example, you wouldn’t try to write a story about what it’s like to be caught in a hurricane if you’ve never been in one before. Why? Because it would be hard for you to make that story ring true with your readers.
The same goes for your SEO keywords. If you sell shovels, don’t include keywords about jewelry. Stick to shovels, digging, tools, excavating, gardening, and yardwork as general ideas. We’ll refine them (like a writer does) a bit later.
- Revise your keywords. Ask any author: What is the most important part of writing? They will answer: revision. All of the great stories that we have come to love took many revisions to get to the form that you see today. In fact, a lot of authors will say that a work is never truly “finished”; it is simply “polished.”
The same must be true about your keywords. The Internet has been around for a long time now, so there’s a vast number of websites out there. If you’re a new site that’s just starting out or you’re involved in a competitive industry, using vague keywords won’t work because you’re competing against so many other sites. Therefore, you need to shape your keywords to be both relevant and specific. Keywords must be something that a searcher will actually type into Google, but not so specific that your site gets lost in the crowd.
Let’s look at a current author. Stephenie Meyer has written the popular Twilight Saga, which, when boiled down to its core story line, is a vampire romance story. When Meyer started penning this series, she clearly had a lot of buzzwords in her mind that she knew would attract a fan base: “vampire,” “romance,” and “shapeshifter,” just to name a few. If you type any of those words into Google and you’re looking for a vampire romance story like Twilight, you’ll find that nothing all that relevant comes up.
But now try typing in “vampire romance story.” You’ll find a number of sites that offer books that contain vampire love stories, and Google also suggests the keyword “twilight.”
So get specific and find keywords that are not overused. Take your list of general ideas and make them more specific. If you sell chairs, don’t optimize for “chairs.” Try optimizing for “comfortable chairs,” “affordable chairs,” “living room chairs,” “ergonomic chairs,” and so on.
- Assess your search volume. Now that you have your revised list of keywords, you need to make sure that people are actually searching for them. In the same way, writers need to know their audiences so that they can write stories that appeal to their fan base. Stephen King, for example, resonates with fans of the horror genre. If he wrote a story about two college students who fall in love on a tropical cruise and live happily ever after, most of Stephen King’s fans would be pushed away. Additionally, if the fans searched for “Stephen King horror story,” the tropical cruise book wouldn’t come up in the search results. (That is, unless during a revised version King had a ghost pirate ship sink the cruise ship and then had the couple fend off a shark attack in open waters.)
Business owners need to know their customer base so that they know which items to market. But how do you know what people are searching for? You can use the Google Keyword Tool to assist you. This tool lets you see how many people are searching for various keyword phrases. It also will assist you by making recommendations of other keywords that are also relevant to your original search term, which is helpful if you’re having a hard time coming up with your own keywords.
Simply take your list of specific keywords, type them into the tool, and see what comes up. The keywords that yield a high number of searches are the ones you want to make note of. If there is a low search volume for a keyword, then you’ll want to ignore it or save it for a later date.
- Identify your competition volume. Now that you have a list of keywords that are specific and have a high search volume, you want to identify your competition volume. This is the number of sites that Google also identifies as relevant to your keywords. Knowing your competition volume is the most important part of your keyword research because it will help you know where you should focus your efforts. Writers are told that they should know where their book would appear on a shelf in a bookstore; that way, they’ll know who their direct competition will be. When I finish my zombie epic, you’ll find it somewhere between Clive Barker and Clive Cussler—no pressure there.
The way to determine your competition volume is to take a keyword from your list and type it into Google. Once you get your results, under the keyword that you typed in you’ll see something like “About 10,000,000 results.” That number is your competition volume, which is the number of sites that you’ll be competing against for that search term. The higher the number, the more difficult it will be to rank for that keyword. Therefore, you want to look for keywords that have both a high search volume and a low competition volume. One number that you can use as a reference point for results is six million. Anything over six million, and things starts to get tricky. That number, however, can vary depending on your specific market.
- Get feedback from your client. Now that you have your list of highly searched yet noncompetitive keywords that are relevant to your industry, you’re going to want some feedback from others before you move ahead with optimization. Writers constantly need others to take a look at their work. When you invest yourself in a project, it becomes difficult to see the errors. Editors help you identify plot holes, grammatical errors, changes in tense, and all of those other wonderful rules of English.
You must do the same with your keywords, especially if you’re optimizing on behalf of a client. Show your client the keywords that you have identified as being prime ones to target. Not only will the client be able to give their approval, but they’ll be able to spot any errors that may exist.
If you’re the owner of the business, then run your keywords by a co-owner or one of the supervisors on your staff to make sure that they’re seen by another set of eyes. Make sure that the words you’ve decided to focus on will actually be doing something positive for your website.
SEO Success Metrics: Where Should You Focus Your Efforts?
Measuring the success of your SEO campaign is no easy feat. With so many metrics to consider—keyword rankings, PageRank™, number of indexed pages, traffic statistics . . . the list goes on and on—you might find yourself on overload when it comes to SEO success metrics. So where should you focus your efforts? Let’s explore the tricky world of measuring SEO and break down the facts about four of the common success metrics.
- Success Metric #1: Keyword Rankings There’s no denying that keywords are the foundation of any SEO strategy, and businesses want to rank as high as they can in the organic results. Yet when it comes to actually measuring SEO, focusing solely on the up-and-down movement in keyword rankings no longer provides a clear picture of success. Search engines are currently personalizing search results based on a user’s search history and geographic location, and they’re integrating shopping results, social media updates, news, blog postings, and more . . . all of which are potentially skewing how a site is ranked.
- Success Metric #2: PageRank PageRank measures the quality of incoming links to your website on a 1–10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Site owners have been watching this horizontal green bar for years, and they’ve been checking it daily for any small variance. Keep in mind, however, that PageRank is controlled by a third party (i.e., Google™), and it can change at will. So, would you base your success on a metric that’s controlled by someone (or something) else and that can change at any time, regardless of the SEO techniques you’re employing? We wouldn’t either . . . and even Google has removed PageRank as a default option from the Google Toolbar.
- Success Metric #3: Indexed Pages Another common success metric that site owners tend to focus on is an increase in the number of pages that a search engine indexes for a website. Although site owners should strive to ensure that search engines are indexing the majority of their website pages, an increase in the number of indexed pages does not necessarily mean that the site is seeing dramatic SEO success . . . and the number can fluctuate at the will of a search engine. If a site owner sees a dramatic dip in the number of indexed pages, however, this likely signals a problem that should be investigated. But if you’re regularly adding SEO-friendly content to your site, adding to your link-building campaign, blogging, and so on, you’ll keep the search engine spiders coming back. And like PageRank, you can view indexed pages as a by-product of a successful SEO campaign.
- Success Metric #4: Organic Search Traffic and Organic Keyword Traffic Every website owner should install a Web analytics program—such as the free Google Analytics tool—and continually track data. With Google Analytics, for example, you can view the number of visitors who are accessing your site after they’ve clicked your listing in the “nonpaid” or “organic” results, and you can view which keywords they used to find your listing. From there, you can evaluate the amount of traffic the keywords are generating each month, the bounce rate for each of them, and whether you’ve focused on any of the keywords—or their variations—in your SEO campaign. You can also compare traffic data year over year and from the start of your SEO campaign until the present.
If you’re seeing an increase in traffic, particularly if it’s from keywords that your campaign focused on . . . congratulations! Your SEO campaign is working, and you’ve focused on the success metric that matters. After all, the goal of an SEO strategy is to increase traffic to your website—and ultimately to increase conversions. So shouldn’t you focus on an SEO performance indicator that isn’t controlled by a third party? Now there’s your answer.

Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5015 TruBrite 15.6-inch Laptop (Silver / Black): Amazing computer!
Where do I begin, I researched laptops for the last 6 months, looking specifications, etc. I need to replace my laptop that is outdated. I bought five years that Dell has been too slow to watch videos, download something or to continue with all the updates to new software. I wanted a laptop with speed, good memory, video and decent, big enough hard drive so I can not change quickly. And I wanted a computer in terms of expandable memory, I would not be limited to a very good price.
This is a 15.6 inch, 2.3 g and 4G of memory, processing speed, a 320GB hard drive is fast, you can most-clear HD video I finally tax You Tube .. lol I need to work at home, because I use it for much of the number of entries. This is one of the best if not the best keyboard w/10 keypad. I have big fingers and it is comfortable and easy to use is designed as a calculating machine for auditors, accountants. There’s just enough structure and adhesion of the keys to type quickly and easily. Another thing I loved was gray interior fingerprints less visible and gives substance to those who do not like the glossy black Toshiba is up there. It was easy to set up I was so worried about how long it would take. I have a wireless network so I only made a boot password and sign on connecting to my wireless network and I have been on the net. Yes for some programs may be too much bloatware (unnecessary), but for those who are not so savvy computer contains all your files up and running, but you must update them from time to time. The camera is very easy to use and Skype is already defined.
When I bought it was a much better case is clear and easy to use for display at night, especially when watching movies or downloading movies online. I just had one month, but if you do not register much of a program to clean Windows 7 should continue to implement quickly. One disappointment is that I wish Toshiba would come with the operating system disks included is irritating to have to copy them on your own.
In general, you can not get most of the features like a large, comfortable full-sized keyboard, with a 15.6-inch TruBrite screen, webcam 1.3 pixel, 320g HDD, ATI tag fish for your CDs / DVD, 2.3g AMD with 4G of memory for that price, you can not compare. In addition, the light easily from room to room. So far, very happy with my purchase.Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5015 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver/Black)
